Touring one of the world’s most energy-efficient smelters

December 10th, 2024

At the end of 2024, Vow Green Metals and Elkem had an on-site meeting at Thamshavn, situated about 40 km southwest of Trondheim, where Elkem produces metallurgical silicon and micro silica.

Did you know that the plant at Thamshavn was one of the first smelter plants in the world to use the energy recovery system? Since the 1980s the plant has recovered its energy, and today the plant generates about one-third of its electricity from waste heat generated during production. In addition, furnace cooling water provides energy through the district heating network to the local community. The local health center and water park, Orklandbadet, heats its pools with surplus energy from Elkem Thamshavn.

Trond Forset, Charlotte Nordhus Lindstad, Gudmund Jensen, and Håkon Nøstvik from Vow Green Metals were given a tour of the plant by the Raw Materials Manager of Elkem Thamshavn, Frode Mælen, who showed the team how raw materials are handled, the production process, and of course the end products.

After the plant tour, the VGM team visited Elkem’s R&D hub in Trondheim to discuss biocarbon products and the progress being made to increase quality.
